Serena Wilson, who popularised belly dancing in the United States, has died at the age of 71.
For forty years, Serena Studios offered classes and dancers for hire and her dance troupe, known most recently as Serena Dance Theater, often performed in New York City. She wrote two books on belly dancing and held workshops throughout the United States. She worked hard to dispel any misconceptions that belly dancers, though erotic, were not strippers.
